With the iExaminer hardware and app, it is now possible to take fundus photos with the iPhone 4. The iExaminer hardware marries the iPhone 4 to the Welch Allyn PanOptic allowing users to perform fundus exams like never before. The iExaminer app makes it easy to record the fundus exam and pull photos to be stored, printed and/or shared. The iExaminer app also walks users through a full eye exam including visual acuity, pupils, ocular motility, visual fields, intraocular pressure and cobalt blue light for external examination. The iExaminer hardware can be found at www.iExam.com and the app is available on the app store. Using the iExaminer is easy and intuitive.
Because the unit is held with both hands, the patient is at arms length and the iPhone screen is viewed with both eyes allowing alignment to be more natural and comfortable for both practitioner and patient. The complete unit is extremely portable so now the camera can be taken to the patient instead of the patient being taken to the camera. It is also a valuable tool when seeing consults and debilitated patients. Photos can be printed wirelessly from anywhere there is a network connection.
The iExaminer has been tested in a clinical setting and can be used by clinical technicians as well as practitioners. The iExaminer takes simultaneous video and high resolution photographs which allows the user to pick the best photos from the imaging session. Those photos, along with clinical data, can be saved, printed and/or emailed. The iExaminer is the brain child of Wyche T. Coleman, M.D. who was trying to simplify the way we perform fundus exams and photography.
He brought his idea to Christopher Shelby, M.D. and a few days later, Intuitive Medical Technologies was born. Together, they developed a technology that allows ANYONE to easily image the retina and optic nerve. The iExaminer has received rave reviews from all medical specialties and allied health professionals. The iExaminer will change the way we view the eye, forever. The iExaminer hardware is patent pending. All rights reserved by Intuitive Medical Technologies, 2011. The company does not state whether the device is available in Europe.
