Eurospine 2015, which has been taking place in Copenhagen this week, has been used by J&J’s DePuy Synthes Spine team to showcase its holistic approach to spine pathologies. The so-called “Procedural Solutions” approach is built on the premise that clinical needs in spinal surgery go far beyond the provision of products, and addresses the main clinical challenges by helping to improve overall practice efficiencies.
The “Procedural Solutions” experience is a wrapper encompassing products, enabling technologies, professional education programs and services. From the company’s perspective this is demonstrated in four main surgical indications: Adult Degenerative Deformity, Thoracolumbar Degenerative Disc Disease, Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease and Vertebral Fractures in Elderly Patients.
The DePuy Synthes showcase includes Expedium VERSE, a new thoracolumbar pedicle screw system, part of the Expedium platform dedicated to deformity treatment in complex pathologies such as scoliosis. The versatile solution reduces the number of required trays and cases while enabling the surgeon to address unanticipated circumstances, which can occur during any complex procedure. Much of the functionality typically afforded by the instrumentation earlier is now delivered through the comprehensive feature set of the implant.
Other highlights included EXPEDIUM® and VIPER® IGS navigated instrument sets for the corresponding platforms, SYNFLATE balloon, completing the Vertebral augmentation portfolio, the new ANSPACH EG1TM Power Tools high speed drill and the DERMABOND® PRINEO® skin closure system from Ethicon. New services such as the eSIMS inventory management solution and the DATA operating room efficiency program, part of DePuy Synthes Advantage, round off the presentation.
The company invited industry partners Brainlab and Surgimap to join it on the booth, to represent their complementing technologies. While Brainlab displayed spinal navigation solutions compatible with EXPEDIUM® and VIPER® IGS, and Airo® Mobile Intraoperative CT, Surgimap demonstrated new preoperative planning, surgical simulation, and case sharing software to improve patient care.
“Procedural Solutions is a concept developed to take care of spine pathologies in a collaborative way with our clinical partners, and to support them in achieving better results in terms of clinical outcome, patient satisfaction and costs – the Triple Aim”, says Chris Eigenmann, Director EMEA Spine and Neuro Marketing DePuy Synthes. “Surgeons, management, hospital staff and patients all benefit equally from the collaboration.”
