“We are continuing to closely monitor all evidence. This needs more analysis before any conclusions can be drawn and further advice given. We have already taken prompt action to investigate safety concerns and have provided advice on patient management to relevant healthcare professionals.”
As long ago as April 2010 UK’s competent authority the MHRA issued its alert relating to the management of patients with metal-on-metal hip prostheses, relating specifically to DePuy’s ASR implant which has been the subject of global media coverage.
MHRA has issued further information in the interim period, but has now updated that guidance with a statement which can be found here in which it reiterates its position. An MHRA spokesperson stated that “On the evidence currently available the majority of patients implanted with metal-on-metal hip replacements are at low risk of developing any serious problems.”
