Physicians Play “The Price is Right” and Lose

Physicians are clever folk when it comes to clinical matters, but surveys find they know relatively little about the price of the devices they use. We argue that simple price transparency can change this and potentially save a fortune.

“It is surprising they we are implanting devices that are very expensive and don’t know or understand how much of the healthcare dollar we are spending.”

So says the author of a new report that details how U.S. orthopedists are only within the ballpark of estimating the price paid for the things they implant every week, 20% of the time.

We discuss the notion that the clinical and procurement functions really should speak to each other if healthcare spending is to be brought under control.
