The Paxman Scalp Cooling System has been named as one of Cleveland Clinic’s Top 10 Medical Innovations of 2018.
Background
Developed in Huddersfield, UK, the Paxman Scalp Cooling System is the world-leading hair loss prevention system for chemotherapy patients. It has been used by over 100,000 patients in 32 countries and is responsible for helping patients to keep their hair and retain normality during chemotherapy. The system was cleared by the U.S. FDA in May 2017.
Hair is the second fastest dividing cell, which is why chemotherapy, which works by targeting all rapidly dividing cells in the body, causes alopecia. The hair follicles in the growth phase are attacked, resulting in hair loss approximately two weeks after the commencement of chemotherapy treatment.
Scalp cooling works by reducing the temperature of the scalp a few degrees immediately before, during and after chemotherapy. It has been shown to be effective for preserving hair in women receiving chemotherapy for early-stage breast cancer.
Now in its 15th year, the annual Medical Innovation Summit is organized by Cleveland Clinic Innovations, the development and commercialization arm of Cleveland Clinic. The list of up-and-coming technologies was selected by a panel of Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists and was announced at a presentation at the 2017 Medical Innovation Summit.
The Medical Innovations 2018 report highlights that ‘newly diagnosed’ cancer patients have a lot to process and for women the inevitable loss of hair is often one of the hardest side effects.
It goes on to say that the Paxman Scalp Cooler is a new technology that is making its way to the U.S. that will help eliminate this problem from some patients’ lists of worries
