Merit Medical Snare’s FDA Clearance

In short

Utah based Merit Medical Systems, Inc., has barely been out of the news in recent weeks as it has announced two acquisitions, firstly Thomas Medical and then two weeks ago, peritoneal dialysis catheter company Medigroup. Now Merit has a new FDA clearance to trumpet as it’s ONE Snare™ endovascular snare system has gained its 510(k) and will see its U.S. launch in January

Background

Merit Medical describes itself as a leading manufacturer and marketer of proprietary disposable devices used primarily in cardiology, radiology and endoscopy. Its ONE Snare™ Endovascular Snare System is a single-loop snare designed to provide both accuracy and reliability for effective foreign body manipulation and retrieval.

Endovascular snares are used for a variety of purposes including retrieval of inferior vena cava filters, repositioning of indwelling venous catheters, stripping fibrin sheath formation, or assisting in central venal access venipuncture.

Indeed it is a heavily featured product, considering its disposable nature. It comprises a gold plated tungsten, coupled with a nitinol core construction for a combination of controllability without kinking and visualisation under fluoroscopy. The ONE Snare is available in multiple configurations to provide retrieval options within a variety of vessel sizes.
