UK MHRA Responds To Media Criticism

MHRA fights back against media claims that it needs to “recover its grip” over medical device regulation in light of the metal-on-metal hip situation.

In a letter, which can be found here, UK MHRA boss Sir Kent Woods has refuted claims made in The Independent that the government agency only acted to issue safety advice on all-metal hips following media publications. In a firmly worded riposte Professor Woods goes on to counter the claim that commercial interests influenced the working of the expert group.

Closing his letter Professor Woods states that “The MHRA was the first regulatory agency in the world to issue advice to clinicians about metal-on-metal hip implants in April 2010 and we, in combination with our expert advisory group, are continuing to closely monitor all the latest evidence about these devices.”
