This Week’s “View From The Med” Editorial Online Now. Uncomfortable Reading.

Imagine the pain of being the mother of a kid who made a big mistake ten years ago, aged only 14, and stabbed one of his peers. Now the Saudi government’s appointed judiciary has decided that unless you cough up $250K they’re going to divide his spinal cord and paralyse him for life. As a medtech pro, how do you feel about exporting to this country?

This week’s editorial takes a look at the sickening story of how the brutal Saudi regime is incurring a penalty of “waist down paralysis” on a kid who committed a stabbing when he was 14 years old. In an ironic twist, a Linked-in discussion started up about how to best market one’s products in the country.

Given that governments, hungry to maintain lucrative relationships with the “Kingdom” are unwilling or (charitably) unable to bang the drum too loud, our editorial simply asks whether we medtech folks are all that happy about our products being used for the opposite of the purpose we designed them for.
