AAOS: Next Year Fly Economy…DVT Risk Is No Higher.

DVT and flying are becoming bedfellows. This work by the American College of Chest Physicians dispels a few myths.

The American College of Chest Physicians has released a study about the risks of DVT when on a plane, and the findings are reported on netdoctor here.

Interestingly there seems to be no association with either cramped economy class seats or alcohol consumption, but there is an association with window seats of all classes, most likely because of their associated lack of easy access to “getting up for a stretch”.

Other causative factors include age, previous DVT and recent operations.

So unless you fit any of those conditions, next time you’re planning your AAOS trip, save the business class flight cost, sit in an economy aisle and get quietly drunk to compensate.
